Philippe Perrin - Always the sun from 31/03/2020 to 22/05/2020
Philippe Perrin, a French artist born in 1964, is first and foremost the meticulous director of a realistic narrative challenging the audience with his obsession to portray the forces shaping the lives of men. Faith, violence, love, injustice and drugs. It is never a moral lesson or an example, but rather a representation of oneself in connection with these forces.
His medium is reality as it presents itself now. To work with it, the artist uses the tools of documentary: drawings, diagrams, pictures, collections and reproductions of objects, communication, staged and sometimes spectacular theatrical productions, news items, intimate dramas and modern-day rituals.
One reason why Philippe Perrin's work may stun the viewer and unsettle the enthusiast is that it is radical and exclusive in a vein that is not typically seen in Léon Golub's painting of his subject, or in Roman Opalka's rehearsals, devoting a lifetime to his work.
And if violence is - wrongly - associated with chaos, it is because it remains largely unknown, almost a taboo, and as such is frightening.
